Chicken Cafreal Recipe | How to make Goan- style Chicken Cafreal

Originating from the Portuguese colonies in the African continent, Cafreal is a very popular spicy preparation of chicken that involves green chillies, onions, garlic, ginger, spices and herbs. You can serve it with milk dinner rolls or bread.

A traditional, tangy, spicy green chicken preparation that celebrates the flavors of Goa with every bite. The herb infused flavor along with the spices is a wonderful combination. The recipe tastes amazing with chicken drumsticks and thighs but you are free to use any other chicken parts. 

Ingredients
Chicken drumsticks- 1 lb

For Cafreal paste
Green chilli- 5-6
Garlic cloves-3
Ginger- 1/2 inch
Cilantro- handful
Lime juice- 2 tbs
Poppy seeds- 1 tsp
Cinnamon- 1/2 inch
Cloves- 3-4
Pepper corn- few
Caramelized onion- 1, roughly chopped
Turmeric- 1 tsp
Garam masala- 1 tsp

For Seasoning
 Salt
Sugar
Vinegar


How to make Chicken Cafreal
1. Caramelized onions- In a pan, heat oil and fry onions till they are brown caramel color. Allow it to cool
2. Cafreal paste- Add in all ingredients mentioned under the 'cafreal paste' and grind it into a smooth paste with some water
3. Marinate the chicken with the cafreal paste for at least 2 hours. Overnight marination will be best
4. In a cooking pot, add some oil and allow it to heat.
5. Add in the marinated chicken along with the cafreal paste.
6. Cook for 20 minutes with closed lid.
7. Add in some vinegar and adjust the seasoning with salt and sugar.
8. Now cook it until the chicken is dry.
9. Garnish with cilantro and serve it hot with milk dinner rolls or wheat bread.
